Lesson 8: Music & Sound Effects: Finding Free, Royalty-Free Assets
Music dictates the emotional pace of your reel. Using non-copyrighted music is crucial to avoid platform penalties.
8.1 The Rule of Royalty-Free
- Do not download songs from popular streaming services.
- Do use music provided by the platform (Instagram Reels audio, TikTok Sound Library, or YouTube Audio Library).
- Do use royalty-free libraries or the music provided directly within your free editor (CapCut).
8.2 Using CapCut’s Free Music Library
CapCut has a massive library of commercially usable, free tracks. These are often categorized by 'Trending' or 'Vlog' or 'Upbeat.'
Steps for Music Integration:
- Go to the 'Audio' or 'Music' tab in CapCut.
- Browse categories and select a track that matches the mood of your script (e.g., motivational music for an educational reel).
- Drag the music track onto the timeline.
8.3 Mixing Audio Levels (The 3-Layer Rule)
Poor audio mixing is the mark of an amateur. Use this hierarchy:
- Voiceover/Narration: Must be the loudest element (100% volume).
- Sound Effects (SFX): Used sparingly for emphasis (20-40% volume).
- Background Music: Should be ambient and supportive, never distracting (5-15% volume).
8.4 Using AI to Match Tempo
Some free editors offer AI beat detection (CapCut has this feature). This automatically places markers on the music track where the beat drops, helping you align your visual cuts precisely to the rhythm of the music for maximum impact.
