Welcome & The Basics of Networking

CCNA: 0 to Hero - Comprehensive Network Engineering Bootcamp

Lesson 1: Welcome & The Basics of Networking

Welcome to your journey into networking! This course prepares you for the CCNA 200-301 exam and equips you with foundational career skills.

What is a Network?

A network is simply two or more devices connected together to share resources (data, applications, hardware) and facilitate communication.

Key benefits of networking:

  1. Resource Sharing: Sharing printers, files, and internet access.
  2. Communication: Email, instant messaging, and VoIP.
  3. Centralized Management: Easier backup and security implementation.

Network Components

Every network consists of three fundamental categories of components:

  1. Devices (Hosts and Intermediary): Computers, servers, smartphones (Hosts). Routers, switches, firewalls (Intermediary).
  2. Media: The physical connections (cables, fiber, wireless signals) that carry the data.
  3. Services: Applications and processes that provide functionality (e.g., DNS, DHCP, Web Servers).

Client-Server vs. Peer-to-Peer (P2P)

  • Client-Server: Dedicated servers provide services (like file storage or web hosting) to client devices (workstations). This is the standard model for enterprise networks.
  • Peer-to-Peer (P2P): Devices act as both clients and servers simultaneously. Good for small environments (10 devices or less) but lacks centralized control and security.
