Introduction to FinOps: Why Cost is a Feature

FinOps for Scalable Infrastructure

What is FinOps?

FinOps is the practice of bringing financial accountability to the variable spend model of cloud. It’s not just about saving money; it’s about making money. In this lesson, we explore the 'Iron Triangle' (Speed, Quality, Cost) and why cost must be treated as a primary technical metric.

The Shift from Capex to Opex

Traditional IT used Capex (buying servers). Cloud uses Opex (paying for what you use). Beginners often fail because they treat Cloud like a traditional data center, leaving resources running 24/7.

The Three Phases

  1. Inform: Visibility into spend.
  2. Optimize: Reducing waste.
  3. Operate: Automating efficiency.
