Navigating the Distro Landscape
There are hundreds of Linux distributions, often grouped into families based on their origins (Debian, Red Hat, Arch).
Beginner-Friendly Distributions (Desktop Focus)
These prioritize ease of use, hardware compatibility, and a rich GUI experience.
- Ubuntu: The most popular choice for beginners. Excellent documentation and a large community.
- Linux Mint: Based on Ubuntu, designed to be very familiar to Windows users.
- Fedora: Sponsored by Red Hat, often featuring newer technologies.
Server/Enterprise Distributions
These prioritize stability, long-term support (LTS), and performance, typically favoring the command line.
- Debian: Known for its rock-solid stability. The foundational distribution for Ubuntu.
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL): Commercial, supported server OS.
- CentOS/Rocky Linux/AlmaLinux: Free, community-driven clones of RHEL.
What We Will Use
For this course, we will primarily use Ubuntu Desktop (LTS version) installed in a Virtual Machine, as it offers the best balance of beginner ease and professional relevance.
