How Does the ISS Connect to Earth? The Tech Explained

👈When you see an astronaut making a video call from space, you may imagine there is a “giant router” there. But the truth is completely different 👇 ☝️ First: Why can't we use regular Wi-Fi? Home Wi-Fi: 👈 Its range is only tens of meters 👈It depends on the presence of a stable ground structure As for the International Space Station: 👈 It revolves around the Earth at an altitude of approximately 400 km 👈Moving at a speed of approximately 28,000 km/h Therefore, it cannot rely on traditional ground towers. 🛰️ The real solution: an intermediate satellite network NASA relies on a system called: Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) The idea is very simple: 1 👈The station sends data via professional radio waves (S-Band and Ku-Band). 2👈 The signal goes to an intermediate satellite in fixed orbit at an altitude of ~36,000 km. 3👈 The moon retransmits it to a ground station. 4️👈 From there, the data is transmitted to control centers and then to the Internet. 🔁 The opposite happens when commands are sent to the station. ✌️ What is actually sent? 👈Live video broadcast 👈Scientific experiment data 👈Navigation information 👈Safety systems 👈Crew calls It all goes through the same “space road”. 👌 Is the speed good? Yes. Transfer speed can reach hundreds of Mbps depending on customization. But the capacity is divided between: 👈Scientific experiments 👈 Operating systems 👈Human communications Not all the speed is available for video call only 😉 ✌️✌️️ What about latency? The signal cuts approximately: 400 km (station) ⬆ 36,000 km (intermediate moon) ⬇ Then return the same distance Although the signal travels at the speed of light, this long path causes a small delay (a few hundred milliseconds). That's why we sometimes notice a small time difference in live broadcasts. 👏 Conclusion The International Space Station does not have home Wi-Fi, but rather relies on advanced satellite communications engineering: Station in low orbit → fixed satellite → ground station → control centers → Internet This allows us to see a live broadcast from space as if it were happening in the next room 🌍✨ #idea_programmer #idea2dev
